Winter and Holiday Safety That Reduces Seasonal Risks

Winter weather and holiday gatherings can bring both joy and new hazards. With a little planning, caregivers can help loved ones enjoy the season safely and comfortably.

1. Prevent slips before they happen. Place sturdy, non-slip mats at every entrance and encourage shoes with good traction. Even small amounts of snow or ice melt can create dangerous surfaces indoors.

2. Check indoor temperatures for accuracy. Older thermostats may misread the actual temperature. Use a separate thermometer to ensure rooms stay at or above 68 °F, especially during cold nights.

3. Keep walkways well-lit. Short winter days mean more time in low light. Install solar or motion-sensor pathway lights to prevent falls outside and add night-lights in hallways indoors.

4. Adapt holiday décor for safety. Secure electrical cords along walls to avoid tripping hazards and choose flameless candles instead of open flames. Avoid scented decorations, which can irritate sensitive lungs.

5. Offer lighter versions of favorite dishes.Rich or salty foods can affect blood pressure, digestion, or fluid retention. Preparing lighter versions of beloved recipes keeps the tradition alive without added health strain.

By making small, thoughtful changes, you create a safer environment that allows loved ones to focus on what matters most — enjoying the warmth and connection of the season.
