Cold and Flu Prevention That Goes Beyond the Basics

When caring for someone whose immune system is more vulnerable, avoiding illness requires more than handwashing and a flu shot. While those steps remain essential, there are additional measures that can help reduce the chance of infection.

1. Humidify the air.

Dry indoor air allows viruses to travel more easily. Using a humidifier and keeping indoor humidity between 40–60% can help reduce the spread of airborne germs.

2. Encourage outdoor time — even in cooler weather.

Fresh air helps dilute airborne pathogens. A short walk or time on a porch with a blanket can be surprisingly beneficial.

3. Schedule vaccines strategically.

Flu vaccines take about two weeks to reach full effectiveness. Aim to schedule them before peak flu activity in your area, which the CDC often tracks regionally.

4. Rotate masks.

If masks are used, avoid wearing the same one repeatedly without washing or replacing it. Viruses can remain on fabric for hours.

5. Clean “high-touch” but overlooked items.

Walker handles, light switches, TV remotes, and even eyeglass frames can harbor germs for days. Disinfect them regularly.

By adding these less-common prevention measures to your daily routine, you reduce the risk of illness and help create a healthier environment for the people in your care.
